Past meetings

The Winter q-bio Meeting was launched in 2013 at the Hilton Hawaiian Village in Waikiki, which is situated on Waikiki’s widest stretch of beach. Participants expressed enthusiasm for the developing field of genomic qBIO and were happy to help launch a new annual meeting that would complement the annual summer qBIO meeting (which was held in Los Alamos at the time). The meeting brought together not only respected leaders in the field, but also a large number of rising stars and newcomers.

The second meeting was held at the Hilton Waikoloa Village, which is positioned on the sunny Kohala Coast of Hawaii, the Big Island.  At this meeting, we introduced a number of contributed talks that were given by junior scientists. Participant response was extremely positive and we have endeavored to expand upon this aspect of the meeting.  There was also considerable interest in presentations describing how prominent funding agencies were incorporating q-bio into their strategic planning.

For the third meeting we continued to expand the number of contributed talks and we initiated a workshop on communication in science.  Led by the Alan Alda Center for Communicating Science, audience members actively participated in learning how to effectively share the meaning and implications of their work. Feedback after the meeting was enormously positive and we elected to continue with science communication as a topic in future meetings. The venue was the Westin Maui Resort and Spa on legendary Ka’anapali Beach and concluded with a banquet featured a full luau with fantastic local entertainment.  

The fourth meeting was back in Oahu, at the Sheraton Waikiki,known for its breathtaking ocean-front views offered from 80% of its newly remodeled guest rooms and suites, a first-of-its-kind newly opened “Superpool” and award winning dining venues.  At this meeting we continued our promise to include the Alda Center for Communicating Science, as well as prominent funding agencies.  We also introduced editors from Science and Cell, who provided invaluable information from the publications perspective.
